Dubai is a city of contrasts, offering a unique blend of serene desert landscapes and vibrant urban energy. It’s an ideal layover destination, thanks to its location at the crossroads of numerous international flight routes. Whether you're staying for a few days or just passing through, here are some of the top things to do in Dubai!
Start your Dubai adventure by visiting the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. From the top, you’ll get an incredible view of the sprawling city below. Keep in mind that visibility can vary, so while some days offer crystal-clear vistas, others may be hazier. To make the most of your visit, book your tickets a few weeks in advance, as it’s a popular attraction. Sunrise and sunset visits are especially magical, offering views that will leave you feeling like you're floating above the clouds.
After a long flight, there’s no better way to refresh than with a dip in a pool. The Four Seasons DIFC, where I stayed, has Dubai's first glass-bottom pool, offering stunning views of the city while you swim. It’s a unique experience you won’t want to miss!
Dubai’s desert offers a striking contrast to the bustling city. On my visits to the desert, I’ve found that Platinum Heritage is the best safari operator, taking visitors to the private Al Maha reserve. Owned by Dubai's royal family, this protected area offers a more authentic and exclusive desert safari experience, complete with breathtaking scenery and wildlife.
The Talise Spa, located on the 18th floor of the iconic Burj Al Arab, is a must-visit for anyone seeking luxury and relaxation. The sheer opulence of this hotel, which has claimed the title of the world's only seven-star hotel, is immediately apparent when you enter the spa, adorned with intricate mosaic tiles, many of which are gold. It’s truly a sight to behold and an indulgence worth experiencing.
For a glimpse of “old Dubai,” take a trip to the city’s famous Spice and Gold Souks. Though they can feel touristy, they’re still worth exploring if you’ve never experienced a traditional souk before. While they may not rival the souks of Marrakech or Muscat, they offer a fascinating look at Dubai's past as a trading hub.
No trip to Dubai is complete without seeing the Dubai Fountain show. Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa and just outside the Dubai Mall, this nightly water display is mesmerizing. For the best view, grab a table at the Thiptara Thai Restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious food while watching the fountain dance in the background of the glittering Burj Khalifa.
If you’re looking for a quirky, unforgettable experience, head to Ski Dubai inside the Mall of the Emirates. While it may not compare to the alpine slopes of Europe or North America, it’s still a fun way to spend a few hours skiing indoors in the desert! There’s only one chairlift and a single main run, but it’s a unique novelty for any traveler.
If waking up at 4 AM for a hot air balloon ride sounds too early, consider an afternoon dune bashing session instead. Several operators offer thrilling desert excursions, but I recommend choosing Platinum Heritage for a more refined and authentic experience. Their safaris stand out for their sustainability and attention to detail.
One of my favorite parts of visiting the Middle East is indulging in the incredible variety of Arabic sweets. From knafeh to ma'amoul, there’s something for every sweet tooth, but my go-to treat will always be baklava! Make sure to sample as many as you can while in Dubai.
If you love soaking up the sun, Jumeirah Beach is the perfect spot to relax by the water. While the beaches in Dubai may not quite compare to the pristine sands of Australia, they’re still lovely for a leisurely day out. Whether you're swimming or sunbathing, Jumeirah Beach offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city.
